WRITE YOUR BOOK – PUBLISH YOUR BOOK – PROMOTE YOUR BOOK

WRITE YOUR BOOK PUBLISH YOUR BOOK PROMOTE YOUR BOOK

This book is dedicated to authors everywhere who have a book inside aching to be written.

INTRODUCTION

When I was doing publicity for my books, I met many people at book signings, on television and radio shows – and believe it not, on the street or in a supermarket who told me the same thing.

“As soon as I have time – or when I retire, I am going to write a book. I have an idea that I think is very interesting.”

I always had the same answer for them. “Nobody has time. If you want to be a writer I have a one word for you. Write.”

They always looked at me a little doubtfully and it occurred to me that people just don’t know where to start.

Starting is the hardest part. But, you have already started if you have an idea. Books are never written overnight. They develop as they go along. You could almost liken it to taking a whole steak and trying to swallow it. You have to cut it piece by piece to eat it. By the time you are finished, you have had dinner.

The other objection is that the starting has to be perfect. Every word, every punctuation mark.

Most authors will tell you that you should not edit a book until it is finished. You are not going to be ready to show your new baby to the world until you give birth so the beginning is to write it for yourself.

You’ve had a great idea for a book in your head for a long time – or a memoir you would like to pass on to your children or grandchildren.

But, you are waiting for that big slot of time – for retirement – or a break in your hectic schedule.

This book, NOW ON KINDLE,  will inspire you to start it now. In little pieces. All you need is a manila folder.

Throw in a sentence while you are waiting at the dentist, on hold with an airline – even a long stoplight. You may get an idea for a paragraph one night when you can’t sleep.

Small fragments, in no special order, can add up to a full manuscript. You can put the pieces together later.

This book also includes information on finding an agent, publishing your own book and even how to promote it.

Did you know that Amazon sold five million Kindles in December 2011?

Do you also know you can post your book for FREE?

Don’t wait. It is a thrill to have a book with your name on it. That book is aching to be written. Start it now.

Once again, Corinne, you are an inspiration! I had put aside that book I’ve been working on for years. My 2012 New Years Resolution is to pull the rough copy off the shelf, brush off the dust, and get going on it. This is the year to finish it and get it published. Thank you! Corinne, may this be your very best, happiest, and most successful year ever. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Tricia -

There are few people who have had the experiences you have had.

You have so much to share. Brush off the dust. It is probably almost finished with the book anyway.

Corinne, I don’t have a Kindle. I would love to order this book, but cannot order it through Powell’s (in Portland, OR). How can I get a copy of the book, or an on-line version?

Thanks for your input, Tricia. You are right -not everyone has a Kindle.

Now available as a paperback – thanks to you.

Corrine: I love your phrase “aching to write”. I went to high school with Edward Alby, the famous playwrite. He was asked about his writing. He said it was like “I am big with child”. I tried many venues without success, books, poetry, short stories. Nothing seemed to work very well. I exhausted everything except playwriting. I was still “big with child”, so gave it one last try: Playwriting

My experience with your writing, Reed, is when you guest posted on my blog here.

It was so well received.

Maybe you should revisit your writing. This is the time. What about a memoir? You have had a fascinating life.

A long time ago, publishing a book seems like forever. Now, it is as easy as 1,2,3. There are a lot of books out there that just helps a lot and that makes information to spread as quickly unlike before.

So, when are we going to hear about your book?

Kindle, once you get familiar with it is easy.

Do you know it is also free?

This is another wonderful post Corinne. Publishing a book might be easy now a days, but we can still not argue the fact that writing a book that catches the readers attention is somewhat like one in a million. Been wanting to write a book but haven’t figured out where to start it yet. Hope that 2012 will give me some inspiration to start.

Good luck.

Books are never written overnight – you are absolutely right on that count. I have always wanted to write a book but I just do not know how and where to start. But reading this post, I somehow got an idea. I am definitely getting a copy of that on Kindle.

“Someone” is not a good person, Anna.

Finish your book and find a real editor.

Get a copy of my book. It is reasonable and has many resources for you.

Not one of them pays me and I have used them all.

Yes, indeed. It may take time to write a book, but it would be worth it. You can publish it on WP blogs if you want. Plus, you can sell it on Amazon?

Reply

Corinne January 10, 2012 at 3:07 pm

It is worth it for no other reason that you are leaving a a legacy to your family.

Why don’t you write a memoir? It would be fun.

The most difficult thing is getting it into bookstores. If your book is self published, that is a tough task. You will have to spend a great deal of time either sending letters or visiting individual bookstores asking them to stock your book. You may have to purchase several copies yourself to hand out free to buyers to allow them to read and make a decision. It will end up being a big expense. This is one of the downsides of self publishing. Their books are not sold in bookstores and they will do nothing to help you get your books there.

Reply

Corinne January 11, 2012 at 6:01 am

I have a whole chapter on promotion in my book.

Bookstores will take your book on consignment. And many will feature you as a speaker to bring people into the store.

Yes, you will have to buy the books but they do sell at book signings and you will get your money back.

Amazon is taking over all the book publishing now. Their Kindle is outselling the print books so I would put your book both on that program and Createspace which is their paper program. They are both almost free except for a $39, on the print program where they will offer your book for sale in bookstores.

You can buy books from Createspace at a much reduced cost as an author if you have your book with them.

Bookstores are closing everywhere because of the competition from them.

Amazon has a good search tool for your book. People do look there for ideas of what to read.

Things are changing rapidly in the publishing business.

Don’t be discouraged.

Dear Corinne,

Thank you for a no BS post here to get our writing going. I am definitely one of those guilty ones who find enough excuses to stall on my book ideas. In fact, I have more book ideas than never before because I never actually kept writing.

I like the way you mention how we can throw sentences under any circumstances to write our book. Many sentences will eventually become our finished product.

So you have written a book and had it published. Congratulations. Now you face the challenge of what to do next. Many authors think that marketing is a job for the publisher so they sit back and wait for the royalties to roll in. You might have a very long wait. The market for books is extremely crowded and most books do not sell well. However, there are a number of things that the author can do that will really help so make the move from writing to marketing and take these actions:

Offer yourself for interview on radio stations. Most radio stations are looking for interesting interviews and the author of a newly published book has a good chance of getting on air. You need a publicity letter which says something interesting or controversial about the book and off you go. If you have the budget you can use a professional PR company to target radio and TV programs.
OR Create a web page for the book. Ideally you should have a separate website with an address that features the book title. Now you can exchange links and drive traffic to the site with comments, blogs, quotes and extracts. Be sure to show people how they can buy the book. Encourage user feedback, comments and reviews.
