THE END OF THE WORLD - (again?)
The doomsayers are out again. They are citing the floods, earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, as indicators of not just natural disasters, or global warming - but a message of God’s wrath!
Is God mad? Is there a Higher Being out there who is just disgusted with us and have left us to our own devices?
Do you remember the “earth changes” maps of the 80’s? They were “channeled” by psychics who presumably did not know each other but whose maps were remarkably similar.
Florida, New York City - gone under water. California an island. Montana our most western state. The Great Lakes emptying into the Mississippi. Denver a beach town.
A friend sold her house in Chicago and moved to Taos.
But although these psychics claimed the changes were imminent -
NOTHING HAPPENED.
It is sobering to turn on the news these days. Not only natural disasters but war and violence in our streets. I remember Dr. Andrew Weil, the famous author, saying that it is dangerous to our health to look at any news after six PM. It is destructive to our emotional health.
But if the doomsayers are right, how are we to conduct our lives if we are so fragile to destruction?
Should be stop working on our self improvement? Abandon our efforts to help the afflicted?
We are sitting at our kitchen tables choosing which bills we can pay this month. We are forgoing a modest meal out with our families because we have to put gas in our cars.
We are saying, “Don’t bother me with talk of God’s wrath. He has no reason to be mad at me.”
The ordinary person is powerless about the problems in the world. Our grass needs cutting this weekend. We are looking for that extra $20 to pay for a school trip for our son.
We can do some things. We can make a small donation to the Red Cross. We can vote with our feet this time. Yes, we can vote. If we live in a disaster area, we can help a neighbor.
If we are not among the movers and shakers, all we can do is live. We cannot take responsibility for events beyond our control.
In the meantime, if this is the end of the world - so be it. We’re all going to die sometime.
So all we can do is live in this moment - and this one - and not worry about the future because it will happen with or without us. It is time to enjoy the time of our lives.
So, turn off the TV. Throw a few burgers on the grill. Enjoy your kids playing hoops in the driveway. There is a new baby in the family to enjoy.
And take the time out to smell the flowers now.
Just in case the doomsayers are right and the flowers will all be gone.

Corinne, I loved our conversation when we talked about the end of the world. Corinne I don’t know if this is Earth Changes, Global Warming, Prophesies, The Wrath of God. Mother Earth or just the Cyclical Globe, but the rules are changing. Lets be in gratitude for every moment. Lets be in service.

Hi Corrine,
I’m so proud of myself that I do not waste a single minute of my day to watch, listen or read news (at least not purposely). I rather spend my the precious time to write something on my blog which may enhance my readers lives or read some books.
At least I don’t abuse myself emotionally.
I plant a lot of flowers in my house and I’ll take my time to smell them before they’re gone.
I hope that you spend some of your time to smell the flowers too.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh Corinne, my second favorite topic - under all this is that four letter word fear - how about standing up, facing it and just say “screw you” (other word is too strong for your blog but you get the drift!!! Cowering in fear is just what fear wants — So get mad and say I’m not going to take it any longer. You would be surprised how this works. Kind of a case of it’s either you or me. Or it’s either love or fear - I choose love and if I have to throw a two-minute hissy fit in my kitchen to get rid of it and to call in love - then I’ll do it. I’m choosing love and let the chips fall where they may. All I can do is be a loving person in all my affairs. AND to take frequent news fasts.
Dear Michelle -
You said it all here.
“Lets be in gratitude for every moment. Lets be in service.”
Service does not have to be BIG! It could be as small as having a conversation with our mail carrier about what a wonderful day it is today. (Or, how hard it must be to do her job on a miserable day!)
Dear Grace -
Funny - my favorite Beatles song is “All You Need Is Love.”
No matter how many times I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes. It is the antidote to any hissy fit I may be having.
And as you said, “let the chips fall where they may!”
FEAR is our greatest enemy in life.
Dear Raymond -
How nice to have that visualization of you planting flowers. That ia new Raymond for us to know.
Yes, I plant flowers too. Not many since my “yard” is about four feet by four feet. But it is full of jolly, happy red Geraniums and white Petunias!
They make me happy every time I look at them.
Corinne,
I agree. As a scientist I know that such a large population of one species (humans) is having some sort of impact on Earth as a whole, but there are so many things we humans don’t know about how the Earth actually works. We do know that humans produce 5-10% of the CO2 produced, but we don’t know if that 5-10% is significant and will result in global changes. We don’t really know that much about global change and just how it occurs. It happened long before humans came on the scene.
Regardless of what we know and don’t know, stewardship of this planet is each person’s responsibility and we should all do what we can to be good stewards of our collective home. Recycling, alternative energy, and energy conservation are some obvious things we can all do. And the cool thing about it is we tend to save money when we conserve, recycle and reuse. Saving money is something we all want to do. We like money. It’s what we buy our toys with, and spending less on necessities allows us to buy more fun stuff.
I don’t buy the doomsayers. And wrath of God punishment? Give me a break. Maybe some of what they predict will happen and maybe it won’t. I’m not going to worry about it beyond doing my part as a good steward of our planet. I do vote and I do plant trees once in a while. Trees are pretty, add shade and reduce my air conditioning bill! They also take in CO2 and produce O2. It’s too bad candidates don’t.

There’s a lot to agree with here Corinne.
Think of the future…but live in the moment.

Hi Corrinne,
You are absolutely right! Last weekend my friend passed away suddenly while hiking. He had a heart attack and the fellow trekkers couldn’t revive him…
While my friends and I met up at his wake, we were reminded again that we only have today to live for. Not yesterday because it already past. Not tomorrow because it’s not here yet. So the only time we have is now.
It’s good that my friend in his passing, reminded all of us to enjoy our life the fullest possible now. Not tomorrow nor during the holidays.
So now I put in all my effort to enjoy my work, my friends and my family day by day.
Rgds,
Hai Liang
ps:I also stopped watching news and reading the newspapers which saves me almost one and half hours! Maybe I’ve been reading too much of Raymond’s blog, ha ha…

Dear Sherri -
What a gift to have our own resident scientist on board. Thank you for your honest and scholarly comments.
Why aren’t you wtiting on this more? Maybe another blog?
(although your own is so useful to many people)
We really welcome you here. Please keep coming back!
Dear Hai -
So sorry to hear aboout the tragedy in your life. Our sincere condolences. You must still be in shock.
Yes, these unforseen occurences do bring us to realize how precious each moment in life is.
Any friend of Raymond’s is automatically a friend of our ours.
Come back and visit us soon.
Dear Karen (Karooch)
As always, you come up with the heart of the matter. Now if we can do it -
Hi Corinne,
Thank you for your kind words. Will drop by often. You have good stuff here.

Corinne,
I write on science on my being the change blog. I’m currently working on a series of articles that will become a white paper on alternative energy. I hope to get my Congressman to read the white paper and possibly act on some of the ideas.
I will also be writing a lot about science in education on my new home school your teenager blog. I just started it and it doesn’t have much content yet.
I also plan to start writing more science articles for Associated Content. I’m collecting topics of current interest so the articles I write will more likely be read and syndicate well. The general public needs an appreciation of science I believe the schools have failed to instill in students. I’m trying to write articles without using any science jargon or get too technical with my topics. I believe this is the only way my science writing will make an impact on the general public and anyone in Congress I can get to read them.
I’m happy to answer any science questions anyone has, and I’d be happy to write articles as guest posts for anyone who would like a science or math topic covered.
Thanks,
Sherri

One of my favorite quotes is “I cried because I had no shoes, till I met a man who had no feet”. Being aware of tragedy and suffering can galvanize you into making the most of the wonderful life you have been given.
I wrote a post - totally off message for my blog - about the Cyclone Nargis tragedy a few weeks ago. It did suggest ways people can take action, however small. I think taking up the “ostrich position”, burying our head in the sands, by avoiding news is daft. We are part of a wider society, a bigger world; I could not imagine being so self absorbed that I didn’t want to know what was happening elsewhere.

Dear David -
I should follow my own advice. I am a news junkie. Definitely not an ostrich.
What I mentioned in my article is that Andrew Weil suggested not to look at the news after 6 PM. He said it interferes with a peaceful sleep.
After all, there is no good news on TV. Good news is just not news. Too bad.
By the way, congratulations on your 50th birthday! (You don’t look it!)
Thanks for the compliment! I should have made clear that my “ostrich” quip was aimed more at Raymond’s comment rather than your good self. Avoiding after 6.0 may be a good idea as it also avoids wasting time watching television.
