TAKING A BREAK – Gone fishing

A friend works for a major investment firm.

This week, all the brokers got an amazing email from the big, big boss in New York.

He suggested that all of them have had a very rough two years.

And – wait.  He then said it would be a good idea to take off a few days this week and just chill out.  It was going to be a slow week and they needed a break.

Now, admittedly, they all have their Blackberries.  But they could check their occasional emails or the few calls from clients in a pair of shorts at home instead of a suit and tie in the office.

We are at the end of the dog days.  Labor Day weekend is upon us.  People are coming home from vacation and settling their kids into school.

Even the emails and the blogs seem to have come to a halt.  Not a lot going on.  Not a big amount of traffic.

So, what about us going on strike too?  Unless you are involved in emergency health or security services, pretend you are working for that brokerage house.

I just put a “Gone fishing” sign up.  YOU?

Don’t go far.  I’ll be back.

See ya next week!

Have a great vacation, Corinne. You certainly deserve it! But you have it all wrong about a suit and tie in Wall Street firms. It used to be that way. But now brokers and investmend advisors dress like they’re going to a circus. They’re are in charge of millions , yet they dress like slobs going to a circus. No wonder people are loosing their money.

A suit and tie is a symbol of respect, a symbol we don’t see often these days. Our manners, language and ethics have gone the way of our dress. Can you imagine on CNBC -TV an interviewer addresses the famous Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft as follows: “Tell me, Bill, what really pisses you off?” Mr. Gates obviously taken aback by the question, replys: “Well what concerns me is”….”No, no, Bill”, interupts the interviewer, ” I want to know what really pisses you off!”

That’s where we are today. That’s where we are. We are going down a slippery slope where the FU word will be common place and movies with fornication will no longer be XXX rated. What a shame. What a damn shame!
What a shame!

PS:

But – forgive the plug – there is one brokerage firm in Chicago where employees dress like thoughtful ladies and gentlemen who respect and take the custody of their clients money seriously: SMITH BARNEY! (No, I am NOT employed by Smith Barney.)

Dear Reed -

The broker I mentioned in this article does not work for Smith Barney. I have never seen him without a suit and a tie (Armani suit by the way with french cuffs and conservative quality links. And just 50 – so not one of the old timers. He is doing well for himself and his clients )

So the traditions still exist.

I saw that interview with Bill Gates and was also horrified. The first question could have been excused but to follow up again with that crass question was so disrespectful to one of the most respected businessmen and contributors to the welfare of the world. He was obviously so uncomfortable.

Dressing suitably might not be more than showing respect. Flip flops in the White House? Please.

We do not have to wear sequins – but to dress appropriately at the theater, the opera, the symphony, a nice restaurant, does not seem to be so much of a sacrifice.

We have some timeless, quality things in our closets gathering dust. Why not bring them out to show respect to the venues we are attending?

Class shows. Where has it gone?

You summed it up well, Corinne: “Class shows. Where has it gone?”
