Money can’t buy happiness is one of our oldest clichés.
According to a great many self-improvement sites, it’s also incorrect. A disturbing amount of them have combined the idea of self worth and money- decorating their sites with images of dollar bills and satisfied people.
For a fee, these companies will reveal the secrets of what they claim to be a magically lucrative thinking pattern.
One site even refers themselves to be ‘the millionaire formula’ – claiming that a mere 1% of the population possesses it.
They will unlock the magic for you with costly emotional coaching.
HOW MANY OF THESE PITCHES DO YOU GET A WEEK IN YOUR EMAILS?
Have you bought the million dollar house? The yacht? The Porsche? Are you working that two hour week so you can enjoy all these things?
No?
According to the ancient Greek philosopher Thales, “the most difficult thing in life is to know yourself.”
Even millions of years ago without the distractions of modern life, Thales recognized that understanding our motives and desires is a challenge.
Our complicated psychology causes us many of us to live in a state of self-deception where conflicting emotions and motives lead us to bad decisions and eventual unhappiness.
Essentially, we are an emotionally stunted species. Luckily, we are also resourceful.
The ancient philosophers didn’t have the Internet and its seemingly unlimited resources for self-improvement.
Even Steve Jobs didn’t have it until much later.
Thales might take back his words entirely if he could see the sheer amount of cyber-help available for those seeking to increase their satisfaction in life whether it’s spiritually, socially or even financially
The disheartening fact is that the majority of these self-improvement financial programs are founded on the notion that monetary instability is caused by a negative attitude and self-imposed mediocrity.
They promise that if you ‘break through’ the ambiguous emotional barriers that are holding you back, wealth will automatically come to you.
NOT MANY TALK ABOUT TAKING ACTION (AND – GULP) – WORKING.
These sites generally contain a host of articles, audio programs, worksheets and even month long courses to help members achieve greater self-awareness.
AND MONEY
All the components are covered, allowing their members to choose from something as simple as receiving daily mantras to joining a course that promises a universe altering level of enlightenment.
ALL GOOD STUFF. BUT THERE IS A CATCH.
If you don’t have the time or inclination to sift, there is always the option to consult an online personal growth ‘expert’.
For a fee, these coaches will help sort out your difficulties on an individual basis via Skype or email. Some of these self-improvement gurus have backgrounds in clinical psychology, counseling or media and therefore have the qualifications to provide a useful service.
There are others however, who call themselves ‘theorists’, who offer counseling for an extraordinary sum but completely lack in both education or certification.
These theorists generally tout some kind of key concept they have ‘discovered’ that will change your life if you purchase the e-book or pay for the sessions.
Lacking self-awareness is one thing, but lacking sense is another thing all together. Three hundred dollars for a consultation with a person no more qualified than you are is a ridiculous expenditure
Research is mandatory any time you are spending money over the Internet but when you’re dabbling in the self-help sector, you need to be particularly wary.
Perhaps the most reliable place to find support online is in forums and member communication areas.
Increasingly, people are utilizing online communities to help each other through challenges.
The help that comes from fellow ‘posters’ and in some cases, panels of legitimate experts, is invaluable for many.
Some are just ordinary people who have been where you are. They have dug themselves out.
It is rare that people experience difficulties at the same time as their friends, so turning to a collection of faceless chat room ‘buddies’ who are enduring similar struggles can be very beneficial.
It makes a great deal of sense to seek out a group of likeminded people in order to find support than it does to invest thousands in counseling from someone who is not only tragically under qualified, but may be completely unable to relate to your situation.
The Internet allows us to extend our identities into a social realm that functions ‘without regard to race, religion, gender and equality’. The ease with which anyone can be an Internet celebrity is testament to this.
It’s safe to say that one of the most admirable qualities humans possess is the desire to continually evolve.
We seek out improvement in every aspect of our lives; we advance our technology, we improve our food supply and we struggle mightily for social and economic reform.
However, a glance at the booming self-help industry is evidence enough that improvement is considerably more difficult when it’s on a personal level.
For each moment of fraud and fakery, there are many more positive ways to make changes in your life using the Internet.
In your search for self awareness you may be the next to have your impromptu video go viral and find yourself waltzing onto a late night talk show, best-selling book in hand.
We are rooting for you.
And hoping you did not spend thousands to get there.
What is your experience with these guaranteed success programs?
Tell us.

Corinne,
Your post is very timely in my opinion. What with the current state of economy all around the world, we try searching for a “rich quick” scheme. Sometimes we forget to stop and think if the deal being presented to us by scammers that more than most rob us blind is viable and makes sense at all. We think that with these schemes that abound, it is the solution we look for our problems.
Agreed – I think it’s a part of human nature to want to find that easy solution, but time and time again, it’s never the right answer. Especially these days with Internet schemes abounding, it’s even more important to remember to pause and reassess.
Additionally – it’s important to not only live by these “rules”, but to also instill them in future generations.
If its too good to be true, then it is. I like the story about the successful executive – a Warren Buffet type who when asked the secret to his success he said “Good Judgement”. When asked how one was able to make good Judgements, he replied “Experience”. How does one get experience? His answer, ” Bad Judgement.” James I agree with you. We feel we are lacking something and that someone else has what we don’t. I have found that those who have the experience are usually willing to share it with those who value it. We really need to learn to value good advice from successful people. Usually the cost is true appreciation shown by the application of such advice. You get it when you are stuck going in the right direction and ask for some help in solving the problem. Most of the best advice I have received came from local businessmen who gave it to me over a very early breakfast meal, face to face. They love being valued for what they know, not what they have.

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for the response. This really resonates with me, “We really need to learn to value good advice from successful people.” Being able to see successful people not as “enemies” or “competition”, but as resources is so key.

Approx. 6 years ago I started my plan to escape the 9 – 5.
Someone recommended I turn to the internet…so I did.
Boy, was I was excited!
All the adverts and sales pages were telling me how easy it is to make money on-line. I did believe the stories. I did believe the images of huge mansions, fancy cars and the beach life.
I was going to be rich…within weeks.
I knew little about the internet so I invested $thousands in numerous products.
Jump forward 3 years…
It took me 3 years of working part-time building my on-line business while working the 9-5 before I had the courage to leave the 9-5. I had spent $thousands. I had made many mistakes but I was able to escape.
I’m not rich!
Jump forward another 3 years (i.e. today)…
I’m still surviving. I work from home, full-time on my on-line business helping and teaching others.
I’m not rich in money terms but I am in freedom terms. Working for myself and from home is amazing. I do have to remind myself how fabulous it is.
Nowadays I rarely buy any products or courses and if I see any sales page with images of fancy cars etc…I make a quick exit.

Thanx for a sensible article. We all look for the “short-cut” to riches. It’s about time we were told “there is no easy street!”
Hi,
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! It’s no easy street, but if it were, it wouldn’t be nearly as exciting

Hello Corinne – BFF – I’m here – not sailing yet! Or maybe there is a scheme for this one too?!
I like this statement: Our complicated psychology causes us many of us to live in a state of self-deception where conflicting emotions and motives lead us to bad decisions and eventual unhappiness.
So true my friend – I run so fast just like Andrew stated from these get rich quick schemes. I worked hard for the last 15 years of my life in “real time” work – meeting customers face to face – listening to their concerns, making things right when things got messed up. Hard work indeed for at least the first 5 years of starting my playground business. This is my money maker and allows my pleasures and freedoms.
MakeGirlfriends.com has not made me one penny but I did not intend to start it that way – I started it under the principle that if I touch one life for the better, I’ve done my job! Well my job is now complete but I continue to blog and post my blogs.
I met you because of MakeGirlfriends.com and that makes me RICH!
In gratitude,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for sharing your story – it’s impressive and really important to hear more stories like yours and Andrew’s. Most of the time, you only hear of those ridiculously successful, so-lucky, once in a lifetime successes, that we forget that success comes in many forms.
Happy blogging!
Money is a slippery fish and it seems to come to people in different ways. I very rarely get these messages in my inbox anymore – I guess they are caught in spam net. I was in network marketing for a while and I saw many of these personal growth programs. I don’t have anything against the industry, but I don’t like the way people recruit on the pretense that it will make you rich quick. It is wrong because it all takes work. Even building a successful network marketing business takes a lot of work – a lot of work. Gees – I think even drug dealers work hard. So who exactly is making the easy money? I am not sure. We have to take action and we have to believe that the actions we are taking matter. We have to believe in the destination. Anyway, I am not one to preach to anyone about money. If my economy was a car it would be parked most of the time, but even so, what is success? I feel like I have reached some level of success. Money is another thing. A fuel that keeps our economy rolling. What is success?

Hi Nicole,
Thanks for the comment – and it’s true, what is success and what is a measure of that success.
I think the answer is highly subjective so it’s important for each person to reflect on those measures and believe in them.

I do think it makes sense to work smarter not harder and to learn from others.
I’m pretty rational so see what process the people offer to achieve their promises. If it is only ‘mindset’ or ‘”law” of attraction’ I steer clear.
I have bought some courses and consultations. I am not wealthy yet so they didn’t do wonders for me. Some were helpful; one was a waste of time.

James, I can relate to what Andrew has said. James and Corinne,
Yes, i am playing catch up with the emails again. OOPs.
Great statements hear. I have been at this for some time and it does take being smart to build and internet business the right way.
I find that honesty and hard work is the best policy. You almost have to laugh at some of the sales letters. I exit real quick like “Andrew.
I was lucky that I have found the group of blogger that I have that are honest, loving and ready to help if needed.
I don’t care for the picture of the big houses and fancy cars either. Blogging is about helping and sharing with lot of love on the side.
Thanks again for expressing what can happen on the internet if we are not aware of the dishonest, smooth talkers out there.
Blessing always to the 2 of you,
Debbie

The main reason money don’t bring happiness is that those persons that get to have money don’t know where to stop. They want more and more, and that leads to more work, losing your family, losing your health, and eventually you realize you’ve been working for paper.
This is what made that saying get confused with being a rule.
I’d like to think i’m better than that.
