Chapter eight – GOT A MINUTE?

“Do you have a minute?”

How many times have you heard that question and said yes?

Did it take a minute?  No.

There is nothing that can be done in a minute except a cell phone call to tell someone you are waiting in the car downstairs and you are double parked.

But these are the time wasters in our lives and the reason we don’t get done what needs to be done now.

Unless you boss is the one asking for your time, you have to learn to say no – sorry – not right now.

We all have our lists.  Good.  That’s a start.  But what we are inclined to do is allow ourselves to be interrupted by these “minutes” that take an hour.

NOTHING TAKES A MINUTE.

And you get interrupted at the wrong time of the day.

What’s your most productive time?  It has been proven that there are morning types and evening types.  Look at yourself and evaluate which you are.  When are you most efficient?

When this has been defined, go back to your list and decide what has to be done in your prime time.  Pick the hardest on the list. Get a red pen and mark all the most important tasks with a big “A.”

Then mark the “B” things.  You may do these in the afternoon if you are a morning person.  They do not require as much concentration.  These could include the dentist to have your teeth cleaned.  Renewing your driver’s license. Meeting a contractor at your house for some repairs.  Never use up your “A” time for routine chores.

That means you don’t take time out to have your car washed in your prime time.  It can stay dirty another day.  It will probably rain later anyway.  You don’t fill your tank up in your car if it is still half full.

You don’t take a trip to the cleaners.   Mark all of the above a “C.”

You work.  And you work your list carefully.  You don’t do the easy things first.  That is our inclination.  It is such a pleasure to cross things off that list.

I have a friend who puts things on her list that she has already done so it gives her the impetus to do other things.  Gets her started to cross them off!

If you are a salesman, an order that has already been sold has to be placed.  Now.  Don’t call a prospective client.  That’s a “B” in most cases.  The order is what is important to your company and reflects your productivity.   Do it when you are most alert so you don’t leave out any of the details.

Calling a new client might then be elevated to an “A.”  If you have done all the other important tasks.  You might even be able to transfer that task to tomorrow’s list.

There are also “D’s” on your list.  Ignore them.  If you do, they might not have to be done at all.

These include straightening your office.  You might be able to do a little tidying up when you are on the phone and make the place orderly enough so you can find your files.

The “C’s” could also disappear.

Your wife might take the car to be washed and get gas.  Or, someone in your office who is running some errands for you.  Ask them to use your car.  You might even convince someone to stop at the cleaners on the way.

On the other hand, your Visa credit card might be a “C” when it arrives but it can quickly turn into an “A” a week later.  Those people have the slowest postal delivery system in the country.

If you are really smart, setting priorities on your list could result in some free time.

Time you could use for your own pleasure and touching base with an old friend or making a date for a lunch together.  Preferably a late lunch if you are a morning person.  Or breakfast if you are an evening person.

The D people might just go away.

They may have solved it for themselves and they don’t need you after all.

And the minute that you have left over can be all yours.

DO YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO SAY NO WHEN ASKED, “DO YOU HAVE MINUTE?

TELL US ABOUT IT.

It’s so interesting to me to have already read this book, and now reading this excerpt, have learned something new. It was “Love the Customer like he was buying the most expensive item you sell, no matter what he’s buying” that got me the most in the first reading. And it got me “Employee of the Month” too.

I can see I need to re-read this wonderful book. There’s so many pearls in it, that I have forgotten which ones I have already strung on my “service” necklace.

That is such a great comment, Sharon.

I am sure you would have received “employee of the month” without my book.

I hope you don’t mind but I would like people to know you are a grandmother and you are competing with 25 year old super techs at Apple. – Selling and training.

And beating them. Love to brag about you.

You just naturally care. I bet those young people are learning a lot from you.

Great chapter Corinne… I can truly relate. My most productive time in the work day is late morning, about 1 hour after I’ve had my first cup of coffee, up to early lunchtime. This is the time I am most creative, clear thinking and motivated… then A.D.D. sets in unfortunately :-). It seems I always get that “gotta minute” interruption during my most productive time. And you’re right – it never takes a minute! Next thing I know I’m totally derailed for the day.

Dear Donald -

You and I are twin souls. That’s my productive time too.

I have gotten so I will not answer the phone if someone calls in the AM (unless it is one of my kids who don’t usually call then)

Setting the priorties by alphabet really works for me. We always want to do the easy things first.

Theother thing I should have mentioned in the chapter is that it is OK to just take a bite out of a huge project. We are always looking for a big slot of time.

And it rarely happens.

Hmmm Beth – not me.

The silence of the night is for sleeping time.

I find I switch more recreation dates to a late lunch. Hardly ever go out for dinner. It ruins the next day for me to stay out late.

But I am often checking my emails first thing at 6 AM. Then it is time for coffee and the newspaper -

and to work

Anyone else like that?

I am more productive during night time. Maybe its because I enjoy the silence of the night whenever I do my works. While everybody is sleeping, I can concentrate more on what I am doing without any distractions at all.

Dearest BFF,

Of course I have the courage to say NO – a rule of thumb for me is if I can’t devote 100% to it then the answer is usually NO so I don’t end up disappointing someone and even better disappointing myself.

ABCD – love your alphabet method…great thoughts and ideas….

You are my BFF –
Miss you,

You, my BFF, Nancy, I believe.

It takes courage to say no. But the person who is asking you to chair an event has a list of people in front of him or her.

They just call the next person.

Why did we always feel we had to say yes to every request?

I used to be like that. Not so much now.

But…………sometimes I do. Especially if it is a good friend.

Anything you need? Call me.

Corinne

When someone asks, ‘Do you have a minute?’…they normally want 10 to 15.

If you cannot say ‘no’ face to face, shut your office door or put a sign up saying, “Please do not disturb’ or turn off Skype!

You can always politely say, ‘If it really will take a minute, yes…as I’m in the middle of doing x’.

Having said all that…this is important…come closer and listen…

If it’s a paying customer asking for a minute…my approach, no matter what I am doing, give them the time they need. Paying customers are important and they are approaching you for a reason…so help them.

I am a paying customer and not once have you rushed me in a conversation when I needed advice.

I would give one bit of advice to your customers.

Decide what you want to know before you ask. Andrew gets it fast. He is a quick study.

Then listen and let him get back to his work.

If it is involved, I have never found him to rush me.

Hi Corinne,
This chapter whetted my appetite for this book. I can so relate to the points you made. I’m a morning person and when I realized that, I started doing the hardest tasks on my to-do list first.
But you know, there are some whose advice is to do the easiest first on the list so that they can feel a sense of achievement for completing a task and can tackle the hard tasks next.
I guess it depends on what works for us. I’m also looking forward to having this gem and I’m going to add it to my looong list of books to read. :)

As for work. I am more productive in the morning. I leave the hardest things for morning and the easy stuff for late in the day or evening.

It took a month or so, but they are now selling.

I agree. When people really need help we have to answer the call. You know ow to do that and when it is necessary.

Otherwise, just say no. Maybe later. Take care of business first.

Dear Fern -

Yes, I have some suggestions.

Contrary to what the so called gurus of blogging tell you – don’t smother the Internet with posts every day.

I cannot tell you how many I get every day in my inbox and it just overwhelms me. Some, even though I like them, I delete them It is too much.

Put up a good post once a week. Answer EVERY comment you get.

Comment on other people’s posts. It will link back to you.

Write about what you know. Don’t exceed 1000 words. 750 is better.

Format your post with lots of white space and bolding.

Don’t be afraid to give your posts a compelling headline.

Read Copyblogger.com every day. He is the master.

Let me know how you are doing. We all started from scratch.

Tell stories. Don’t preach. People love stories.
