PERSONAL GROWTH - Is Anyone Listening?
I had some authors on my TV show who were on fringes of being really “way out there.” I used to refer to them as my “woo-woo people.”
They were the ones who used all the jargon of the new age community and they talked about things like chakras, hugging trees, soul retrieving, and speaking to plants for advice, etc, etc. All interesting stuff but not exactly what you hear people discussing around the water cooler at the office. And the sponsors for the show were not happy if it got too wierd.
I used to give these authors a little talk before the show that went something like this.
“I want you to visualize the person who is looking at the show.” (Visualize was a word they understood)
“He is a guy who has just come home from work. He is tired and sitting on the couch in his underwear, watching TV and drinking a can of Budweiser.”
Then, I would continue. “If we don’t reach his guy, we have failed. We are not preaching to the new age choir here.”
They were really pretty good about it. They changed the word “chakra” to “energy fields” and they started to use people speak instead of new age talk.
In my mind, this person I described was a ficticious viewer.
I live in a nice area of the city of Chicago but if you go about two blocks west, you make sure that you lock your car. The same is true in many urban areas.
But the most convenient post office is there. One morning, I was getting out of my car to mail some letters, when I noticed a man leaning against the wall of the building. He was obviously some kind of a workman from the way he was dressed. It was 11 AM and he was drinking a beer out of a Budweiser can.
He called out to me, “Hey, television lady!”
I looked at him in amazement. “Do you watch my show?”
“I never miss it. I don’t understand it all but I’m very interested.”
Here was the man I had made up. He was real!
I added that story to my instructions!.
There are all kinds of people out there who are striving to make their lives better. Not just the so called spiritual types.
There are people out there who are listening.
P.S. A while back, I posted an poem about my cousin, Gail. I asked her permission to put it on my blog and she said, “Sure, it was all true at the time!”
Check it out at http://www.personal-growth-with-corinne-edwards.com/consciousness-woo-woo-circuit/.
I thought you might enjoy it because Gail is a real person! She is far beyond that poem now and is a life coach and and healer doing wonderful work.
Ha! I love that. A great thought to remember: We aren’t preaching to the choir - who can we reach with our thoughts/passions/teachings/ideas/love that we wouldn’t normally reach? Great
