When I arrived for a visit, there were three young fathers intently talking around my son’s dining room table in their small town in Illinois.
Was it a neighborhood meeting to fight a liquor store being approved in the area?
A local political strategy meeting for an election? A zoning change?
None of the above. It was a car clinic.
No, not NASCAR.
On the table were three small blocks of wood and they were discussing the Pinewood Derby, a national racing competition for the Cub Scouts.
The ingredients were simple. Four nails, four little tires and a 7 inch by 3 inch block of wood. From these, a racing car was to be carved to run on a metal track. It was one of the most important events of the year in the town – and in many towns and cities in the country.
This was serious stuff. Talk about filing nails down smoothly, adjusting wheels, wind resistance (what?) and the advantages of graphite.
Behind the men, listening raptly, were three small boys dressed in their Cub Scout uniforms who presumably were the competitors.
There’s a standing joke that there should be a trophy for the best father’s car.
There was even a cartoon from the Cub Scout magazine showing two Cub scouts saying, “I hope when I grow up, I can build a car.”
Yesterday was THE day. The fathers and the scouts were up at dawn for the race. Hundreds of people from the town went to the grammar school where the race was to be held cheering on the participants.
It was a huge success. There were concession stands serving food and baked goods at low prices. It was a wonderful time.
And every Cub got a badge whether he won or not. So the kids were happy.
The fathers were laid out on their couches exhausted from the ordeal. Most were in bed by eight o’clock.
This slice of Americana was not about the race. That is only one of the many activities that a volunteer army of men and women contribute to scouting and their communities.
This is about family. About fathers and mothers who are active in small and large towns around the country supporting their children. About the work that the Boy and Girl Scouts do, still these many years, in the work of instilling good values in our young people.
Principles which include their Core Values and the Scout Law:
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, brave, clean and reverent.
Remember those?
I say there definitely should be a trophy for the “Best Father’s Car!”
They earn it all year long! God bless them, everyone.
Did you build a car for your Cub Scout? “Fess up.

Sounds like fun. This is like a miniature soap box derby. I wish they had one in our place.
If you have boys in your family, why don’t you volunteer for the Cub Scouts?
Or even not.
Lots of those boys do not have a father in the home.
You could really do some good –
(and build a car)

We had to do a model of the town I lived in when I was young for a school project. Each student had to build a replica of a shop from the Medina Ohio square Silly me, I chose the Gazebo. Ha! But my Dad finally took pity on me and helped me build it. Dads are good for that kind of stuff.

Dear Nancy my BFF -
My son Alex is now the Scout Master for the Boy Scouts. He does such a good job with those boys.
Some of them have never been out of that small town. He takes them everywhere.
They overnighted in a submarine in Wisconsin – went to the Lincoln Museum in Springfield – many times to the Museum of Science of Industry downtown.
And he is one smart talker and salesman. He gets lots of free goods for the boys who cannot afford camp or the fees for trips.
They just made $4400 selling Christmas trees.
So proud of him.

Hi Corinne,
Have to say no on that one. First I had no boys and the girls weren’t in girls scouts, but i love there cookies. do have a granddaughter in the girls scouts. Have to teach her mother how to sew those patches on though, I am getting a little tired of doing it. Just jokin love doing it for the little one.
Those cars sure do sound like fun though.
Thank you for sharing this car derby
Hugs to you,
Debbie

Dear Debbie -
They had fun with the Pinewood Derby. I could not believe what a turnout they had for the race.
In those small towns, this is a big event. And so good for the kids.

My daughter is attending an overnight camping trip near our place two weeks from now. Would you have tips on this as it’s the first time a child is going on a camping trip? More power and hope you see this before she goes on this trip.
That was great! Your Cub scouts made me thought when I was a kid, I am a Girl cub scouts in our school before and I was having great fun to the other kids whom I did not knew I was making friends with them. As a Cub scouts when you are in field you meet different people, you will mold as a better child or a kid rather because the discipline is always there and you learn something what is right or wrong. By the way that was the great experienced as a fathers and mothers who are very supportive with that very good children.

From my experience, which is not much. Aerodynamics doesn’t play too much of a roll. Your best bet is to get as close to the weight limit as possible, polish the little nails, “true” the wheels, and put in graphite for a lubricant.
When they’re grownups they get real cars, when they’re kids they get wooden ones. Got to start somewhere, but i don’t really understand this whole obsession with cars men have.

Dear Claire -
Yes, these boys grow into men and continue to be obsessed with cars.
I don’t understand it either. If the car runs well and looks presentable.it’s fine with me.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
I haven’t laughed like I did a few moments ago since… I don’t know when!
) You know what’s even funnier? I did the same thing with my niece when she had a science contest, but I didn’t realise it until now.

Dear Elena -
I once wrote a book review for one of my sons. He was completely overloaded.
“Tell me about the book. I’ll write the review.”
Would you believe – and I was a published writer – that his teacher gave me a C?
I was furious. But I could not complain.
My son brought home from his youth church class, a flyer talking about a pinewood derby coming up… I thought he would be excited – I was, the thought of building something together, then racing it in the derby sounded great to me – but he’s not interested. What 7 year old boy is not interested in a pinewood derby? I have to keep working on him…
