CHAPTER FIVE – IS ANYONE LISTENING TO YOU?

I had some authors on my TV show who were on fringes of being really “way out there.”

I used to refer to them as my “woo-woo people.”

They were the ones who used all the jargon of the new age community and they talked about things like chakras, hugging trees, soul retrieving, and speaking to plants for advice, etc, etc.

All interesting stuff but not exactly what you hear people discussing around the water cooler at the office. And the sponsors for the show were not happy if it got too weird.

I used to give these authors a little talk before the show that went something like this.

“I want you to visualize the person who is looking at the show.”

(Visualize was a word they understood)

“He is a guy who has just come home from work. He is tired and sitting on the couch in his underwear, watching TV and drinking a can of Budweiser.”

Then, I would continue. “If we don’t reach his guy, we have failed.

We are not preaching to the new age choir here.”

They were really pretty good about it. They changed the word “chakra” to “energy fields” and they started to use people speak instead of new age talk.

In my mind, this person I described was a fictitious viewer.

I live in a nice neighborhood in the city of Chicago but if you go about two blocks west, you make sure that you lock your car.

The area is usually featured in the news with some crime.

But the most convenient tiny post office is there.

One morning, I was getting out of my car to mail some letters, when I noticed a man leaning against the wall of the building.

He was obviously some kind of a workman from the way he was dressed. It was 11 AM.

He was drinking a beer out of a Budweiser can.

He called out to me, “Hey, television lady!”

I looked at him in amazement. “Do you watch my show?”

“I never miss it. I don’t understand it all but I’m very interested.”

Here was the man I had made up.

He was real.

I added that story to my instructions.

There are all kinds of people out there who are striving to make their lives better. Not just the so called spiritual types.

There are strangers or just people out there who are listening to you.  Do you know how important you might be?

ARE YOU SPEAKING TO THOSE PEOPLE?

That’s a great point.

As a blogger, the question “Are you speaking to those people?” helps put things into perspective before I even begin the blog post.

Who knows what kind of influence we can have on others?

Thanks for sharing this post and excerpt from your book.

Dear Ron -

A viewer sent me an email when I was on TV.

Did not know him.

He said he was in the depths of depression and was contemplating suicide.

His TV was on and I was interviewing Neale Donald Walsch, the author of Conversations With God.

He sat down to watch. Something Neale said changed his mind. He did not say what it was.

You never know when you may be playing the role of a Guardian Angel.

Ahhh, thanks Corinne. I didn’t realize ‘Soul Retrieval’ was Woo-Woo. I should just say, ‘Sometimes we lose pieces of ourselves when we experience heartbreak or trauma. Going back to those memories can be an act of recollecting ourselves and becoming whole again.’ That would help the guy with the Budweiser more than saying we are going to beat drums and chant you whole again. Of course, he may want to quit drinking first. Maybe there is also a better term for alcoholism.

Dear Nicole -

Hmmmm.

“‘Sometimes we lose pieces of ourselves when we experience heartbreak or trauma”

Those pieces we lose are always made whole by the learning they provide.

Somehow, I think we fill in the spaces with experiences we make some room for.

Like with a relationship we feel we have lost. As long as we hold on there is no window for a new one.

And the learning makes us more discriminating about who shows up.

I see that when I read your beautiful poems. You notice new experinces more fully and with passion.

Corinne, while reading your story the starfish story came to mind. You’re so right, you can’t help ‘em all, but if you just keep doing it anyway you will have helped more people than you’ll ever know because, as you explain, you’ll even impact innocent bystanders – beer-sipping or not.

Dear Beat -

We know more than we think we know.

Sometimes, we hesitate. But what you are afraid to say may be exactly what that person needs to hear.

We should follow our intuition.

Hi Corinne,
I actually enjoy listening to the woo hoo people but I totally understand that not everyone is interested in the lingo. Perhaps speaking to someone like the man drinking the Budweiser is probably more the kind of person who we want to act like we are trying to reach.

Dear Justin -

I enjoy it too and of course know all the lingo.

But my show was on national cable in the US and the sponsers wanted me to be a little more mainstream.

More self help, some spirituality (no specific religions) and personal growth.

(Unless it was a really high profile author)

I loved that the Budweiser guy was watching my show every night after work.

Wow, Corinne, what you say is true in so many situations. Know who you are talking to. Or better yet, like you said,”Know who is listening!”
I think of the time when I first started my pediatric practice and talked to a parent about their teenagers. I was directing my remarks to the parent; and the teens, who needed the information, were not listening. Things changed for the better when I began to talk with the kids, they listened and you can be sure the parents did too.
I need to put that bit of advice into my blogs. Thanks, I appreciate what you said.
PS. Just as soon as I get my Kindle re-charged, I’ll download your latest book. I enjoyed your one about writing and promoting your book! Thanks again!

Dear Par -

I bet you would be even more effective if you were able to speak to the kids alone.

Especially boys. I have had four.

I am waiting to hear that you have time to reformat your book for kids alone. They are the ones who need the information and it is a superb book.

Looking forward to future articles from you in the meantime.

So pleased that we are reconnected. You are a prince of a man.

You are so right. I always see the kids and the parents together to find out what brought them in. Then for those who are 13 and older I tell them that we will talk about the medical history together with their parents , then excuse Mom, Dad, and /or both for the physical exam, then discuss the kids health habits alone with only the teen present, and finally have the parent come back in for a summation. That’s one of the reasons why I learn so much about what the kids think, what’s going on in their lives, something about their personal philosophy and find out the best way to help them stay (or get) healthy. Look at page 237 in Messengers to read more about helping your kids talk. You will also like to read “Dogs and Fleas” starting on page 110 and find out how I make talking with teens fun on pages 111-113. Enjoy and Thanks,Corinne for this forum! Par

Dear Par -

You touched on so many topics that are mysterious to teens that I now see that you had lots of alone time with them.

They obviously trust you so they talk. They also must feel that what they say is confidential and not shared with their parents.

(Or their grandmother. Not a word about your book from my grandson)

Dear Stacy -

I got a Kindle for Christmas from my kids and I love it.

I am filling it up with books. It will hold many books so you can go back and reread the ones you like over and over without dragging a heavy paperback.

They collect until you delete them.

Great for long plane rides.

They will keep coming, I promise. This is my sixth year blogging.

This book is spiritual for sure – but it has nothing to do with religion.

It deals with everyday life. Hopefully, in a different way than most books.

Take a chance and read it.

My wife has shown me your blog and asked my to purchase the kindle version of your book. Honestly, at first I felt really sceptic because I already have seen a lot of releases without any relevant information. But after reading a few lines from this post, I feel pretty much better, and I also would like to read it. That’s why I’m going to purchase the kindle version and paperback as well, so we can read it at the same time:)
