An ordinary Friday.
UPS arrived with a box.
Hmmm. What did I order? Too big to be a book.
Opened it. Inside a camera. And an invoice billing me. Shopped to me.
WHAT?
Called the company. They claimed I opened a large “Line of Credit.” I owed them over $3200. for the camera I ordered.
And my next camera order, to another person, was about to be shipped out that day.
GOTCHA.
Talked to their fraud deparment. They had ALL my information. Social security – date of birth – mother’s maiden name – city of birth – and most important my high FICO score. in the 900′s. Not that I have money. I just pay my bills on time.
I was one of those people in that video.
The company was very cooperative. Canceled my account and sent me a return UPS label to ship the camera back.
They also warned me not to give the camera to a messenger who might come to my door and say they had made a terrible mistake. A package which belonged to a neighbor was mistakenly delivered to me.
NOW THE WORK BEGAN
You have the right to ask that nationwide consumer credit reporting companies place “fraud alerts” in your file to let potential creditors and others know that you may be a victim of identity theft.
A fraud alert can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you.
It also may delay your ability to obtain credit. You may place a fraud alert in your file by calling just one of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. As soon as that agency processes your fraud alert, it will notify the other two, which then also must place fraud alerts in your file.
- Equifax: 1-877-576-5734; www.alerts.equifax.com
- Experian: 1-888-397-3742; www.experian.com/fraud
- TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289; www.transunion.com
This is important
An initial fraud alert stays in your file for at least 90 days.
An extended alert stays in your file for seven years. To place either of these alerts, a consumer credit reporting company will require you to provide appropriate proof of your identity, which may include your Social Security number.
THIS WAS NOT JUST A CHARGE ON MY CREDIT CARD SO I WANTED AN EXTENDED ALERT.
If you ask for an extended alert, you will have to provide an identity theft report. An identity theft report includes a copy of a report you have filed with a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency. For more detailed information about the identity theft report, visit www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/.
I FILED A POLICE REPORT AND GOT AN OFFICIAL NUMBER.
(A COPY WILL BE MAILED TO ME)
There’s work to be done here. Hope you have a scanner. They want a copy of your SS card, your drivers license, a bill from a utility company and a letter with the details of the theft explaining why you want this extension.
This took about 10 hours.
OK. I feel pretty good about stopping further theft but how can I monitor future activity? What can slip through the cracks?
These guys are smart. They have all my infomation. Remember, they did not open a new credit card – they opened a line of credit. And I have a high FICO score.
WHAT WILL THEY BUY NEXT?
A CAR?
A HOUSE?
They have ways of actually creating a job – a high paying job – to qualify. I have seen this done when I was in the real estate business by fraudulent mortgage brokers.
I needed a monitoring agency which will check all financial transactions anywhere.
After research, I chose LIFELOCK for myself and to suggest to you as an affiliate program. They were among the few that were most highly rated.
Around $10. a month. Whew!

O….M….G! You’ve got to be kidding me. I think the scariest part is the “don’t give it to a messenger who might SHOW UP AT MY DOOR.” Are you kidding me here? They’re going to steal your identity, your credit and then come rob you at your house.
Corinne, this is insane! I will tweet immediately and forward a link to family and friends.

Dear Kathy -
I wasn’t scared when I was in the house. I just would not open the door to anyone I did not know. And I have a security system.
But they are beating people up to rob them of cell phones. So, I certainly looked around if I was walking to my car.
The worst was when I had to get that big box to UPS. A great time for a robbery.
Solved that by putting it in a garbage bag. Brought it out on garbage pick up day.
Just tracked it. The camera arrived in California. A relief.
Hope the thieves know I don’t have it any more.
Thank you I have to share this video with my family and friends living in your country!
It’s shocking.

This sort of thing doesn’t surprise me…the things people will do to get products and money.
Thing is many of them think they are doing nothing wrong and we(the victum) will just reclaim on the insurance. They don’t think about intruding into ones privacy or the amount of work it takes to resolve.
Glad you took immediate action and beat tham.
I need to find a UK version of LifeLock.

Dear Andrew -
I called Lifelock this morning. They do not insure anyone who does not have a US social security number.
You can be living abroad though.
I am sure there are similar programs in the UK. I checked the top three in the US and picked the one who had the best customer service.
That was Lifelock.
They spent a lot of time talking to me on the phone. Not just questions on line. And are available 24 hours a day.

Wow Corinne,
I’m sorry to hear this happened to you. It happens all the time, unfortunately. Glad you got it taken care of right away. The longer it goes on, the more damage a thief can do.
What I don’t understand is why the 3 credit companies don’t assume fraud alerts on every request for credit by everyone. Ya, it slows it down, but you used to have to show up in person with all your ID to get any credit at all. When you had to go to the bank to get a credit card, there was less theft, especially when it was a local bank and they knew you personally.
Big banks, opening accounts and credit lines online, and the general anonymity of the internet are going to make this the biggest crime we face in the not-so-distant future. I can see credit fraud becoming a much more serious crime, maybe punishable like armed robbery.
In some movies and TV shows set in the future, credit fraud is a more serious crime than murder. I’m beginning to see that these writers were not being hyperbolic, they were prescient.

Those were the good old days, Sherri – when you went to the bank to get a credit card. Also, if they knew you well, you could get a line of credit with a telephone call – just your signature -
-and the same day.
My local bank is now owned by a big bank. Different.

I am very sorry Corinne, glad you stopped them in there tracks. Yes, this is really getting to be a big problem. We all need to be careful and thank you for the information on LifeLock. Steve and i will check this out right away.
Blessing to you and hugs too.

It is worth your piece of mind that someone reliable is monitoring your credit 24 hours a day.
Correction on the price. I am paying $13.50 a month because I wanted to add international monitoring.
If you call them, tell them you want their 10% discount. Ask for it.

Dear Charlotte -
Yes, please pass around. People (including me) don’t realize that it can happen to us.
I thought I was doing a great job by monitoring my credit cards like a hawk.
This was different. These thieves opened a commercial line of credit.
Corrine, this is really scary. I mean your identity being sold in an underground market. I hope they can put a stop to it. Dateline is very good show ’cause they tackle topics that are very sensitive and topics that people need to be aware of of. Thanks for this post Corrine, I will definitely share this video to my relatives living in the United States.

Dear Julia -
The Chicago Police called to follow up with me today and get more information.
The officer told me they are deluged with identity theft reports.
Dateline certainly threw a bright light on this. If you go to Youtube you can see their whole programming on it. I think there are six parts. All scary.
Yes, I watched the whole parts in Youtube. I was really struck with this guy from London. The one who asks those women for marriage. He was the culprit. tsk2. I can’t believe too that these women were just used by this man. =(
I hope that your case will be solved Corrine and that everything will be okay.

Hi Corrine,
Sorry to hear that has happened to you! It happened to me last year, by someone in Australia, but my bank caught it very quickly and let me know.
Lifelock is supposed to be OK, but they have had a few run ins about what they claim and had to clarify what they actually provide and protect against.

But I may sign up myself too now those issues are clearer.
I hope you get it sorted out quickly!

Dear Joel -
The bank credit cards are doing a very good job with their own “Google Spider-like” checking.
If they see anything unusual, other than your normal spending, they call you right away. And if you are traveling, you must call them to tell them where you are going. They really watch patterns.
A wealthy friend had $27,000. put on her Visa card in 24 hours. She usually shops in luxury stores.
The charges were all for places she never shops. Like Target, Home Depot, Value City.
She had the only card in her possession. Evidently, they can make a card too.
I wonder how this can be stopped. Do we have to start paying cash?
In my case, the $3200. camera was not put on a credit card. The thief opened a commercial line of credit with a large photography site in my name.
So much for having a good FICO score.

Great blog post my BFF on keeping our eyes and minds open to such activities…..it happens all around us – In fact before this post came out yesterday, I was at a surf shop – (Buying new sandals – not a surf board quite yet)…..anyway, the lady in front of me was telling the owner of this local store that her husband had his identity stolen and the nightmare it was ….
In gratitude to all the valuable information that you have included in this post!

You are a prime target – with your changes in residence on your quest for the perfect place. And so many charges all over the country.
More than most.
Please click on the link in this post and protect your identity. It is cheap enough.
The hardest part for me is that in order to put my house in order – I am being besieged with forms from the police and SS.
Spending so many hours on this.
For the crime before – not future.
Although Lifelock is not involved with the theft which happened before I subscribed to their service they are helping me.
Take care of Nancy.
It’s a crazy world out there.
thanks for letting us know about it! i will tell to all my friends now!

I agree, Michelle. The garbage bag was a brilliant cover. I probably wouldn’t have thought of that.
I would have grabbed a grocery bag or a canvas book bag just to make it easy to carry. I wouldn’t have thought about them watching to see if they could still get their stolen merchandise.

Dear Sherri -
I have to admit I was watching over my shoulder every time I left the house. I was afraid they would follow me.
They beat people to a pulp for a damn I phone.
This camera was more than $3200.
The garbage bag was my daughter in law Dawn’s idea. Nice to have creative people in the family.
I was glad to get back in my house with my alarm on.

Dear Michelle -
First -
WELCOME HOME. So glad to have you back.
I too had been thinking about Lifelock.
I kept seeing their ads on TV with a guy saying -
‘This is my real name. This is my real social security number. And my mother’s maiden name. I dare you to steal my identity.”
I joined one week too late. I would have received an alert from them that someone was opening a credit line in my name and it would have been stopped immediately.
Straightening this mess out has been a nightmare. So many forms to police FTC – Phone calls – letters – scanning – credit agencies. I still have to show up to Social Security in person with all my ID. They will not take copies.
I figure I have about 25 hours into this now.
BAH HUMBUG.
But I have it now.
Great article. Identity theft is a huge problem, too many assume it won’t happen to them. Hopefully the laws and international community will catch up to these criminals.

I had only seen the second part of your post, but reading the first is even scarier! My experience with identity theft was on a much smaller scale – a $250 purchase at an out of state Target that I was able to reverse within a few days. Still upsetting, but not nearly as much as this! I’m glad you got LifeLock – I have it too and the security is worth every penny.
An identity being sold…it’s so terrible Corrine.. Unfortunately, it happens all the time and this is a huge problem now.. Glad you stopped them in there tracks. Thank you for letting us know about this.

You can’t get Lifelock if you don’t have a US SS# but I would look around.
Andrew found a similar program in the UK.
Lifelock (or similar) goes way beyond credit cards in searching for fraud.
And this thief had every bit of my information.
