IDENTITY FRAUD – YES, ME. – An update

by Corinne

There were about twenty women at the hairdresser when I was telling my story ABOUT MY IDENTITY THEFT to my long term stylist.

If you read my post from last week, you know that a large line of credit had been opened in my name at a photography site.

I received a Canon camera, billed to me and shipped to me which was worth over $3200.

When I called, they told me they had ALL my information and had checked my credit to open that account.  I was prime.

This week, I returned the camera.  I was afraid to take it to my car so I could get it to UPS.  They are beating people up to get an I-Phone.

These thieves knew I had this expensive camera.  It was in a large box.

My daughter- in- law, Dawn,  had a brilliant idea.  Put it into a garbage bag and take it out on garbage pick up day.

It worked.  It is now back to the web owners in California.  I was happy to get home safely and put my alarm system on.  I just hope they know it is gone.

They women at the hairdresser overheard my telling my stylist my experience.

They  gathered around with their stories.

EVERY ONE OF THEM HAD HAD IDENTITY THEFT ON THEIR CREDIT CARDS.

One said a large amount had been charged in London while she was on a business trip in New York with her husband just last week.

I now have Lifelock monitoring my credit but I was a week late in signing up.

It would have saved me about 20 hours in repairing the mess – and I am not done yet.  I  would have received an alert from them that a credit line was being opened and it would have been shut down RIGHT AWAY.

I had been thinking about it after seeing some of their ads on TV.

A man announces his real name, city, date of birth and his social security number.

AND DARES YOU TO TRY TO USE IT.  YOU WILL BE BLOCKED.

Identity theft is epidemic.  The police department told me they are overwhelmed with reports.

THE NSA IS NOW RECRUITING FORMER HACKERS – 3000 OF THEM TO HELP STOP THIS.

Please consider protecting yourself.  It is reasonable.  I am paying $13.50 a month for their highest protection.

Hello My BFF Corinne,

You had mentioned on your last post that I am prime suspect for Identity Theft since I move around so much. I would think that they couldn’t find me? Maybe I should move every 2 months instead of 4-6 months???

No seriously, this is a BIG issue and I thank you for your knowledge and awareness in all this!

In gratitude to you my friend,
Nancy

Dear Martha -

Our stories are important. I learned a lot from this experience.

We always think these things happen to other people – not us.

Dear Raymond -

Since there was no bank or credit card involved in this trasaction, they could not help.

Things are quiet now. But it was a lot of work filing all those forms.

Now that I have Lifelock, I feel more safe.

Thank you for sharing this one. Everyone now are aware of identity fraud. You have to report and file complaint about this. An Internet Attorney would be a great help.

Corinne,
Sorry to hear that you got tagged and with such a visible and actual piece of merchandise. Very scary indeed. Like how you handled it. Very cloak and dagger.

My credit card got hacked too. I got an immediate call from my credit card company and we stopped that activity immediately.

I love that life lock has an affiliate program. I believe in their service – their cause. I might just add their button to my site too.

Dear Cheryl -

This was much more insidious than a fraudulent charge on a credit card.

The credit cards are getting good at tracking “patterns” now and will call you before you know it has been done.

The thing to watch out for are small charges – we tend to ignore these or think – “Did I charge somthing I don’t remember?”

Important.

These are test charges to see if your card goes through. then they hit it with a large charge.

What a world.

I liked the way you handled the situation, very Mafia like. So far, I haven’t been a victim of such act, but I have heard a lot being caught in such a dilemma. Don’t worry, I won’t wait for it to happen to me. Great to hear a lot of good hackers to be on our side.

Wow – identity theft is becoming more and more prevalent. It happened to me recently and when I told my friends about it they had all had a similar experience too. Even though we all take steps to protect ourselves from these things, it still happens all the time! :(
