GHOSTS, SPIRITS, SEANCES - and a story
“Do you want to go to a séance?” she asked.
My friend, Evelyn, was one of the foremost psychics in Chicago. She told me she and a few other psychics were regularly asked by the Chicago Police Department to consult on locating murder victims.
I don’t know if they will admit to this, but I know that Evelyn would not lie. The unique aspect of her service is that she refused to charge. She felt it was a Divine gift she was given and it should not be exploited for money.
Of course, I said YES! The idea was so intriguing and the thought that there would be a possibility of hearing from some of my departed loved ones was irresistible.
I was inspired to write about this experience after I read Stephen Hopson’s interview with Slade Roberson on spirit guides and angels.
The evening of the séance arrived. We climbed three flights to a modest apartment where it was about to begin.
The lights were put out and many candles were lit to reveal the medium, an elderly lady, who was lying in a long white gown on a sofa in the middle of the room. There were about 30 people attending. It felt a little spooky.
She began by calling forth her angels and guides. Then there was a long silence as she waited for them to appear.
Finally, she spoke.
“It is snowing and very cold. The guides who are with us are American Indians. They are sitting in front of their teepee. They have messages for us but they are waiting.”
Another long silence.
“They are awaiting energy from this group. We must bring up the energy by singing “Ten Little Indians.”
Everyone started singing the song over and over for about ten minutes. Still no messages.
At this point, I was thinking, “What the h–l was I doing in this crazy place singing a song about Indians?”
Suddenly, I heard a very distinct, clear voice in my head. It was not audible.
It said several times, “There is no insurance policy!”
WHAT? I was not looking for an insurance policy. Why was I getting this message? What was I supposed to do with this information?
The medium was about to give up. The energy was not right for this night.
Rather embarrassed since I was the newcomer, I spoke up. I told the group what I had heard.
The lights went back on. A man I did not know came over to me.
“Thank you. My sister insisted that my mother left a large insurance policy and I came tonight to ask the medium.”
Why did I get the message instead of the medium? I have wondered about it for a long time.
Anybody have any ideas?
I have always been psychic. Always “known” things. I thought everyone was like that. My mother was psychic. I believe we all are if it is not discouraged by our parents when we are young.
I would not be qualified to put out my shingle because the things that just “came to me”- arrived like this - in flashes. I would not be a reliable “reader” like Slade who communicates with spirit guides and angels. I never knew where these messages came from – they just came.
I guess I will have to ask Slade.
A quote from his blog:
“Divinity is not supernatural — it’s supercommon. Magic can be found in the mundane — the power is all around you. You have a spiritual support staff of benevolent entities who protect you and guide you on your life’s mission.”

Great story! I am always impressed by the mediums I know who can open and close the channels at will. I have gotten random messages in my life, but it has never been something I have attempted to control. Thanks for pointing me to Slade’s interview! Very cool stuff!!!

Wow, what a beautiful story - you certainly know how to let words flow onto the screen, don’t you?
I find this fascinating. Here are my thoughts. I’m no expert but…..
Like Slade and countless books have revealed, all of us have psychic abilities but like everything else in life, certain people take that and develop them over time. It comes easier to certain people than others but that doesn’t mean they don’t possess the skill.
I find it fascinating you heard the message the way you did. I would venture to say you were more “open” to receiving perhaps because you were a newcomer and not attached to any particular result.
I just finished reading a fabulous book called “The Reconnection” by Dr. Eric Pearl who says all of us have not only the ability to be chanellers but can also serve in the capacity of a healer.
In his book, he recommended that if we find ourselves healing others and/or receiving messages that we not question it. We just accept it and try to get of our own way (ego). He said the moment he tried to “analyze” it, we’d be blocking it somehow. Has something to do with our energy.
In other words, when we’re open, unattached, unquestioning, it flows easier versus when we hunker down and try to force it to come through.
I guess it would be like trying to find your keys and you go crazy looking all over it but the moment you let go, BOOM, there it is. Ever have that experience? I don’t know if that’s a good analogy or not but it’s similiar.
Fabulous story - I enjoyed it greatly.

Corinne, I agree with Stephen. The fact that you honored the message by repeating it is great. I have learned to do the same thing whether the message makes sense to me or not. The person that needed your message got it because you were brave enough to take a chance and share it.
I have learned so much about Spirit Guides from Slade and his blog since I discovered him and it about 1 1/2 years ago.

We all get those “messages” we just don’t pay attention to them like we should. Most people were/are not trained to listen to them.
I get most of my advice when I am doing anything with water, dishes, showering, hanging out at the lake, even sitting quietly with a glass of water. I figured this out a long time ago (awareness) and now I not only listen, I talk … a lot .. out loud. Hey, I don’t care who hears me.
I was in one of my “moods” recently - I am a political junky and am not happy with this Palin thing - is McCain nuts? (oh well, another story) Anyway, I was mentally bitching and all of a sudden - loud and clear (in my mind) I heard.
“Stop Complaining” ……….. so I did.
Terrific Article Corinne - keep moving into that land. We all really live there.
very good article — one that i find personally inspiring as well. i also have “psychic tendencies” (for lack of a better term), i believe that most of us have psychic ability. what is it that allows some people to have so much more access to that part of themselves? i think you’ve hit on one element, which is spending time with others who have developed their abilities in this area. thanks for sharing this story.

Corinne,
I loved this memoir and I am truly flattered to have played a part in your inspiration.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear other psychics say that there was a time when they did not feel they could claim or call themselves psychic and work on behalf of other people — because of the intermittent, passive intuition.
It’s ironic, because for me and for others that I know, the reliability and being able to “do it on cue” comes as a result of deciding to “hang out your shingle.”
There’s definitely a relationship between what you think may be blocking you and what may actually power the development itself.
If you receive the call to offer readings to others, and you make that decision or that commitment, your psychic development or education goes into hyper-drive.
After reading some of your personal experiences, I feel you should know the possibilities are more practical than you may think…

Dear Melissa -
Glad I led you to Stephen and Slade’s sites. We personal growth bloggers have to support each other - otherwise - the “Get Rich Quick” people will take us over!
I think we all get “random messages.” The point is we have to start listening!
Dear Stephen -
As always, your comments are so encouraging to me!
This is part of it that was particularly interesting -
“When we’re open, unattached, unquestioning, it flows easier versus when we hunker down and try to force it to come through.”
When we close off our channels to Infinite Intelligence with our worries, ambitions and not to mention, telling IT what is best for us - how can anything other worldly come through?
I think Violet Lily Rose said that one of her best thoughts come through in the shower!
Dear Violet Lily Rose -
Water to me is a powerful conductor. I live right on Lake Michigan and just listening to the waves at night facilitates my awareness!
STOPPING COMPLAINING? What a great idea. I am going to do that all day today. And maybe tomorrow too!
Dear Jackie -
This is a powerful thought in your comment.
“You’ve hit on one element, which is spending time with others who have developed their abilities in this area.”
People love to shoot us down. Don’t know why. Maybe it is their fear. I have found it best not to share my thoughts with this kind of person. It is too discouraging and we are very fragile beings!
Dear Patricia -
I am new to Slade’s blog - but I share your enthusiasm for what he has to share with us.
My feeling from reading your articles that you are a extremely deep person who is just starting to realize it. Your thoughts are more and more fearless.
Can’t wait to hear how your study with him progresses!
Dear Slade -
Needless to say, I was breathless waiting to hear what you might have to say about this article!
Thanks for your truly amazing response.
This is really giving me food for thought -
“It’s ironic, because for me and for others that I know, the reliability and being able to “do it on cue” comes as a result of deciding to “hang out your shingle.”
Scares me a little. Never really considered anything like that.
I will be studying your every posting on your blog with great interest and intensity.
If you ever need a leg up from a “novice reader” - call me. I am pretty good at Tarot. Usually have only read for friends but have been surprised how accurate the readings have been. Maybe I should start there.
P. S. I consider you a friend!
Thank you for your great encouragement!
Dear Corinne,
WOW… what I find amazing is that you found the courage to speak up even though you were a ‘newcomer’.
DID you fight mentally with that ? or did you jump right up and say it half shocked at yourself for coming forth with the words ???
To paraphrase Caroline Myss, these things are not gifts, they are skills. Everyone has the ability it only needs to be
honed. I have expressed to friends it is very much like picking up a bowling ball. You can’t expect to have a 300 gave after bowling 1 or 2 times. You need to practice
the skill. The same thing with communications and connections.

Hello Deb -
Yes, I was very reluctant to speak out at that seance. Everyone else there seemed to know each other. I was surely the “newbie!”
I almost didn’t and then I just blurted it out! There seemed to be so much urgency about the message.
Turned out to be the right thing to do! But, I never went to a seance again.
Yes, I am very familiar with Caroline’s work. She is such a talented intuitive and healer. I have read all her books.
Thanks for letting us know her website.
Nice story. Your site is really good, I love reading the articles.
I’m not a fan of this type of stories but this one was different. Thanks for sharing.
