YES, WE GET COMPLAINTS ON THIS BLOG.
So, in the interest of transparency, I thought I would share them with you.
The original post is over a month old and you might miss my answer.
First, I want to say thanks to Michael and Jerry who took the time to comment. Both remarks were on the review I wrote about Debbie Ford’s movie, The Shadow Effect.
HERE ARE THE COMPLAINTS -
From Michael -
I wasted $23 (DVD, S+H) for a shallow infomercial with almost no information; this was just a commercial for Debbie Ford’s classes. It is not exactly a revelation that we have a “dark side.” Plenty of other new-agy clichés await on the DVD – like you project onto others what you don’t like about yourself – WOW – never thought of that!! And the production was so cheesy; stupid re-enactments and truly overbearing corny music blasting through the entire thing. The music is what made the whole DVD seem somewhat humorous, since every sad story was accompanied by truly corny music, every triumph accompanied be corny triumphant music. The filmmakers knew they had nothing and so they thought they would fool people into thinking they were actually seeing something by putting in really loud self important music. The music attempts to “project” what we are supposed to feel, talk about “projecting! There was nothing to this movie – what a waste, don’t waste your money!
From Jerry -
Michael, I haven’t seen it but I’m not surprised by your experience. New Age/Personal Transformation promoters abound, with a very few being of some value and most just used car sales people without the garish checkered sport coats and mis-matched slacks. In fact the really bad New Age types will dress in robes, usually white, or have a glow from sloppy Photo Shop editing. They mostly have a run of a couple of years where they are IN, then slowly fade like a washed up musician playing ever seedier clubs and bars. Remember Gary Zukav? Once a high flyer, now playing 75 seat auditoriums if he can get that. Caroline Myss? Where did she go to? Wayne Dyer is still spouting the same inane drivel he has done for the last decade…no change there. My advice: save your money or spend it on chocolate or beer. NOBODY is going to sell you the answer to anything of any value for $29.95.
MY ANSWER –
There is no doubt that interest in the self help sector has lagged. Transitions Bookplace, a large personal growth bookstore in Chicago, filed for bankruptcy last year. Wonderful people. My heart broke for them. Their author presentations were packed almost every day.
Perhaps, the economy contributed to this. When people are choosing between the latest self improvement books and improving their credit score by paying down debt, the books lose.
Overall, the publishing business is down.
Or – Are people just done? Is this phase of self help run its course? Are we tapped out?
My impression of these commentators is that they are extremely well versed in the whole arena of self improvement. They have their PhD’s and were probably in on it from the first wave.
For people like them, there was nothing new in Debbie Ford’s movie. I have to agree with them. Nothing new for me.
Since my job for years was interviewing these authors on TV, I must have read a thousand books on the subject.
But there are still “beginners” out there. We must not abandon them. Information in Debbie’s movie about discovering the hidden “shadows” that hold us back could be revolutionary and a revelation. She did a good job at explaining it.
And hey – what’s wrong with her selling her classes? I get at least four offers in my email a day that promise if I buy their program, I will be guaranteed millions on the Internet. They want a couple of thousand dollars for the information.
Paying $29. for the movie is chump change.
A few more comments from my experience -
There was a rumor that when Oprah’s people called Gary Zukav for an interview, he hung up on them. He did not know who Oprah was.
I tried to convince him to come on my TV show and he kept putting me off. He seemed shy and very uncomfortable with publicity. He probably just did what was in his publication contract. I never got him to come on. We probably will not hear anything much from him unless he has a new book.
Wayne Dyer is another story. His last book, “Excuses Begone!” hit the top of the best seller list. Wayne is the real deal and he continues to draw crowds. I think his success is grounded in his common sense approach. He is not a “woo-woo” author.
Caroline Myss? She has just come out with a brand new book that I am eager to read. It is called Defy Gravity. Fascinating title. Click here for the full scoop on Caroline.
So, Michael and Jerry – thanks again for weighing in here. I love people who disagree. Makes it more interesting.
Chocolate and beer are much better choices for your money. Enjoy!
Personally, I prefer vodka. It is a quicker fix.

O my, this made me laugh out loud. The part about the Vodka that is.
I understand the feeling of being ripped off. When I feel like that, it’s because I’ve acted against my instincts and put faith in something outside of myself and then don’t get what I want. I think everyone has had that experience.
On TED.com, there are two women comedians who just blasted Oprah for having the cast of “The Secret” on her show. Well that wasn’t really my thing either but I know for a fact, that it helped a lot of people see differently and that is a miracle in itself I think.
I wonder which speakers would appeal to Michael and Jerry. What do they buy of a Spiritual nature, that they are glad for? Did they share that information?
Are they smarter, further along, happier and more peaceful than those that bought and benefited from the DVD in question? That would interest me.

Fascinated by your view that the self help sector has “lagged”, whether in line with general economic times or a more general malaise. I’m not in a position to really observe the industry, but another way of looking at the sector is the type of products being sold. To me a self help book has limited appeal as people read books the same way – cover to cover then discard. The current development of other ways of delivering material – such as interactive DVDs, membership sites – anything that helps you to learn and change habits rather than just read – should help the sector in the long run. This assumes people want to change and not just dream!!

The self help crowd that have some form of interaction with some higher power as part of their teaching (they are always further ahead in their understanding of this – thus our need for them) do not appeal to me or many other people. I believe people are tired of experts that have special knowledge the average person doesn’t. I think more and more people either lose hope (the real appeal of most self help) or realize they don’t need the expert they need to tap what is inside and they pay for people to help them do that. The whole wellness movement that was quite fringe when I got involved in 1971 is now much more mainstream and that is how people are helping themselves. It is more physical and I believe much less metaphysical. People are looking for ways to improve that don’t require an expert. By-the-way I am a Makers Mark bourbon fan. Liked it so well I signed up to become an Ambassador.

Thanks so much for sharing these comments, Corinne. I’m a coach trained by Debbie Ford and have been with her on this process of making a movie that could open the hearts of people to themselves. I know personally that her commitment is to share this work with everyone who will listen. And why? So people will love themselves…stop judging themselves and start living their highest potential. Watch the interactive if you want process! It will do the trick. However, if you haven’t done a ton of personal growth work, the movie can blow you out of the water. I’ve seen it! LOTS! and I agree that the movie does not answer the question on what to do next…interactive will do it!

I remember reading years ago – in another enlightened age – that we get the guru we deserve. Perhaps the same is true with self-help professionals.
Dear Sharon -
Glad you got a giggle from the vodka remark.
I think we have all had the experience of being disappointed with a purchase.
- whether it is a book, a movie or even a dress that turned out to make our complextion look GREEN when we got it home!
Fortunately, for these commentators, they did not mortgage the farm.
Dear David -
I thought there was real wisdom in this part of your remark -
“The current development of other ways of delivering material – such as interactive DVDs, membership sites – anything that helps you to learn and change habits rather than just read – should help the sector in the long run. This assumes people want to change and not just dream!!”
I have a friend who buys every self help book and never reads one of them. I think it gives him comfort (??) to see them on his bookshelf.
I did a national TV show with authors for so long that even though that career is no longer, I am so sensitive to what is going on that that area. I follow it closely.
At this point, I really think it is not going up – it is fading. But it had a long run.
Business, political and health books are taking over. Toward the end of my shows, I was already switching over to health and especially business books which concentrated on integrity. I saw it coming.
Dear Chris -
As usual, you leave a provocative remark – almost a riddle – that needs more explaining!

Dear CK -
I think the interactive part of the movie series did shed more light on the process.
As you do in your wonderful articles on your blog, Divine Purpose Unleashed.com.
They are always very down to earth and deal with the everyday problems people have.
Always looking forward to more from you.
Although I know you are a student of Debbie’s, you make her teaching your own.
Dear Bruce -
Ain’t this the truth!
“I believe people are tired of experts that have special knowledge the average person doesn’t. I think more and more people either lose hope (the real appeal of most self help) or realize they don’t need the expert they need to tap what is inside and they pay for people to help them do that.”
We are all connected to some kind of Infinite Intelligence or whatever people chose to call it.
I don’t believe we need a guru or a priest, minister to guide us.
Although a wise friend to talk things over with is very helpful. We do need a few brainstormers to help us think clearly here and there.
We are lucky if we have a few friends like that.
