BEDBUGS – OMG – Got them!

by Corinne

bedbugs3 BEDBUGS OMG Got them!

I had bedbugs after all.  It was not my imagination.

I wasn’t going to tell you.  But I figure, I tell you everything else.  So what the hell.  Maybe you’ll learn something.

I had blocked out one statement the inspector from Terminix said.  “If you have them, you’ll know it in a few days.”

I HAD MORE BITES.

He came back the next day.  Still could not find evidence except for my body.  This time he said, “Those are not mosquito bites.   Those are bedbug bites.”

They bite in a pattern.  A couple at a time and they itch.

Terminix is inundated with requests for treatment.  It is an epidemic here in Chicago now.  I had to wait five days for an appointment for treatment.

He said change beds.  They followed me into the guest room.

He said sleep on the couch downstairs.  They came there too.  They find you by the carbon dioxide you breathe out.  They are relentless.

In the meantime, I was to empty all closets and drawers and put the contents in garbage bags that are knotted not tied and put everything in the basement.

Later they will have to be washed and dried little by little.

All washables like sheets, pillows, comforters are to be washed and put immediately into the dryer for at least 30 minutes.  Heat kills them.

I threw everything out I had not worn in five years.  That was the only advantage.  Came to terms with the fact I am a size 10 not 4 anymore.

TO SAY I WAS HYSTERICAL IS A MASSIVE UNDERSTATEMENT. It is a war with an enemy you can’t see.  And they attack you when it is dark.  Like when you are sleeping.

Andrew, the exterminator arrived yesterday.  I met him at the door.  “I hope your middle name is Jesus.”

I had my whole house treated although he said it was a minor infestation.  They treat with high pressure steamers. All mattresses, upholstered furniture.   Even in your light switches.  Then they use some industrial spray you can’t buy anywhere.  Spray all baseboards, corners.  When the bedbugs cross any of the areas they die. They put bedbug proof covers on all mattresses and box springs.  More information below.

He will be back in a week.  And then the week after that.  Then, as needed and a final check up a month later.

WHAT I LEARNED:

A clean house is not a defense.  They don’t care.

If you have no problem at present, go to www.bedbugcover.com and buy covers for your bed and box spring.  They have the patent on these.  Expensive but this is not time to economize.  Bedbugs cannot get into your mattress or box spring and if they do they can’t get out.  These are the ones Terminix uses.  About $85.00 each.

Your dryer will kill bedbugs.  If you buy something in any store, put the items in the dryer right away for 30 minutes.  People return things that might be infected.

This is up to you, but I will not go to a movie theatre.  They love dark places.  Also theatres.

Again, your call, if you have a cleaning service or person who services many houses every week, you are very vulnerable. These innocent people may not know they are carrying pests into your house on their clothes.   I am going to do my own cleaning from now on.  My boys will help with the vacuuming.

Treatment is only guaranteed for 90 days.  I can’t take a chance on getting them again.

If you get them, don’t fool with home remedies.  Call the biggest pest control company.  Again, expensive.  $900. For my whole house.  Plus replacement of comforters etc that will not fit into my washer and dryer.  I cannot, in good conscience, bring them to a Laundromat or a cleaner.  They are all in my garbage can outside.

Go to the supermarket when there are few customers.  Stay away from people on the checkout line.

I would not stay in any hotel for all the money in the world.

If you want to call me paranoid, you are right.

This is a massive epidemic that is sweeping the whole country.

There are many scientists working on the bedbug problem.

I am praying that they find something soon.  My Terminix guy told me they have heard they are working on some kind of chemical that will make them unable to reproduce.

That would stop it.  Not soon enough for me.  I will be bedbug free soon.  Then, I will become a hermit.

By the way, they don’t nest in computers or cell phones.  So I will continue blogging.

In the meantime, for a month, do not drop in for tea.

Hi Debbie -

I was astounded that I got “hit.” For years, I have been teased by my family for being a crazed clean nut.

Get the covers. Mattresses are their favorite place.

Yes, Dawn -

I did learn a lot. The hard way. Hope I made people more aware it could happen.

I have no idea what I could have done to prevent it. Keep going over and over in my mind.

Hi Michelle -

They are not common in Anartica. Guess we could move. Winter won’t help in Colorado. They are inside the house not out.

Thanks Corinne,

Well written, as usual and very useful and beneficial. We got nailed in a New York City hotel after visiting Henry and don’t know if they hitch hiked back home here in San Diego, but I guess we’ll soon find out

Dear Dick -

Heard you had a wonderful reunion with your old friend, Henry.

What a nasty surprise in New York.

It would seem to me if you had some they would have shown up by now. They don’t waste time. They start biting in earnest in a few days.

Believe me, you would know.

Hi Corinne, I know what you mean but this sentence doesn’t make good sense as written: “Bedbugs cannot get into your mattress or box spring and if they do they can’t get out.”

I hope that a treatment is found – chemicals only ever work for a period, natural pesticides with a complex chemical make up usually work best (if there can be one devised that works).

I hope you are finding a way to cope with all the hassles as well as the bugs.

Hi Evan -

Could have written this better. You are right.

“Bedbugs cannot get into your mattress or box spring and if they do they can’t get out.”

If you don’t have them they cannot penetrate your mattress through this cover. If you do have some leftovers after treatment, they cannot get out so they die.

Thanks for being a good editor.

I have heard about some natural remedies but I was afraid to even consider them. What kills them is heat. Everything is steam cleaned like upholstery etc.

They do use some kind of industrial spray on baseboards and in corners. It is not available in stores I hear.

When you start getting bites all over you call the professionals.

Holy moly! I have a couple of road trips scheduled. Hotels. Airplanes. Rental car(s) (Just one rental car. The third plural just worked better.)

I’m just glad I’m not going into any big cities – except people from the big cities will be THERE where I’m going. I’m off to a big international sporting event. And, yes, I have a cleaning lady.

I’m not making light of your situation. I’m pretty freaked, too. But I’m committed for these trips.

Damn it – my head itches now. Ack!

Dear RhondaL -

I asked Andrew, my chief exterminator, how he keeps from bringing them home.

He has been in places where he could see them on the walls.

He says as soon as he gets in his house, he puts all his clothes immediately in the dryer. Then he rushes into a hot shower and puts on all clean clothes.

This of course would be very attractive to anyone there since you would be nude in the laundry room.

In your case, I would bring lots of tall kitchen bags. Put everything you have on in them immediately and KNOT them. Shoes in a pillowcase. Also knotted. Not tie. Take a hot shower. Wash your hair. Them bring everything to the dryer in the hotel. You don’t have to wash them necessarily. The dryer will kill any thing in 30 minutes.

What I would do is first ask the hotel is they have any infestation. Then check the border ends of mattresses underneath for any evidence of bugs or more likely streaks of dark on the edges of the mattress. They leave their excrement there.

My son travels all the time. He leaves his suitcase in his rental and just takes out what he needs for the next day. Also in plastic bags knotted.

Otherwise, give everyone some distance!

Sound extreme? Do it anyway.

Dear Corinne,

I am so sorry this happened to you. I would be losing my mind.
Happy to hear you had Terminix and you will be rid of the bed bugs soon.
Thank you for the advise. I will look into the mattress covers.

Dear Patsy -

I am so disappointed that I will not be seeing you. Too soon. I have to wait for this process to complete.

Get the covers. Don’t fall for some of the cheap ones. These are the ones Terminix uses.

Corinne, bit of a nightmare. a couple of things to know I learned from my son-in-law. first, detection can be done with a dog – the best dogs are trained at the University of Florida, my son-in-law got trained and paid $10K for one. They can distinguish between live and dead bedbugs.
You are right about heat. Large items can be wrapped in plastic, put into a container and heated up to 140 degrees for 8 hours. Kills them all. Furniture too. My son-in- law has brought home some really high end furniture that hysterical women have insisted on throwing out. He wraps it tightly in plastic for 2 weeks which kills the bug but still steam treats it. It is a pain. The nymphs can go through the zipper of a regular mattress cover but duct tape will seal it if you don’t have $85.
I will tell you a funny story about these when we talk again.

Hi Bruce -

I know about the dogs. They charge $300 a room! I don’t have to know where they are. That’s why I am doing my entire house. And with the most experienced pest control company.

Terminix actually has HEATED trucks that they put furniture in and destroy bugs. Since they feel I have a mild infestation, they are not suggesting that.

Does not seem mild to me.

(Wait to tell any funny stories. Nothing is funny to me right now)

Yes, it is a hassle. Can’t wait to see my electric and water bill from all this washing and drying.

Oh, no! I can’t even imagine how you must feel right about now. Those little (fill in the blank) — how dare they move in with my dear friend, Corinne! Doesn’t anyone manufacture tiny IUDs or extremely small birth control pills? Sounds like all they do is munch on people and have babies.

Years ago I saw a couple of silverfish (it even creeps me out to type that word and see it on the screen) so I called Aerex pest control. They were phenomenal and come every 6 months to spray as a preventive measure. Also, they spray outside near the foundation. The expense has been worth the peace of mind. You’d think having cats would help but Ruth and Barry could not really care less. Hard to imagine them in the jungle with their very distant relatives — they would have to hire bodyguards.

Hang in there and maybe turn up the heat! This too shall pass.

Hi Nancy -

The heat would have to be 140 degrees. Don’t think that my furnace would make it.

They are actually working on a birth control spray which would work to wipe them out.

My Terminix man told me about it.

In the meantime, I am working on murdering them.

See you in a month.

By the way, they don’t go after animals.

Thanks for the sympathy. No tea for now!

I am the owner of a 9 room Bed and Breakfast Inn in Napa.
We have the protective covers on all our beds, and needless to say, we change sheets daily. We are very aware of the potential problem and have been very diligent in safeguarding our guests from bedbugs.
We keep our Inn meticulously clean.
It’s a shame you have decided not “to go to hotels”. My Inn is one you can feel safe in and I would love to show you some Napa Valley hospitality!

My dear Susie -

I owned a travel agency for over 20 years so you can imagine how concerned I am with my former industry.

I am heartbroken about this epidemic. People are terrified to travel. Even the most expensive hotels are affected.

I am a crazy clean person like you. My family has teased me for years.

I am a writer and I work at home. I don’t go to movies. My guests are mainly my family and they do not have bedbugs.

How I got bedbugs I’ll never know. It is a serious shock to my budget to pay $900. to Terminix for my small house.

It is interesting that they will only guarantee their work for 90 days if covers are installed on both mattresses and box springs. Are both covered in your beautiful inn?

If so, I would advertise that on your website. Something like, “For your comfort and peace of mind, all our mattresses and and boxprings are covered as a precaution against pests.”

Your cleanliness is not going to protect you from someone bringing them in on their clothes or luggage.

I am praying for some mad genius who will discover a way to eradicate these pests.

I love the Napa Valley. Just looked at your website. Your place is so charming.

Sending you the best and most warm wishes.

Wow Corinne!

That’s terrible. Bedbugs are really hard to get rid of, and keep away. I hear now that stink bugs are starting to invade where bedbugs were invading. I heard it on NPR Talk of the Nation Science Friday, so it isn’t an urban legend.

Because of my allergies to dust and dust mites, everything clothe is covered in plastic with duct tape over zippers, we have no carpet (wood floors), the rugs are washed, sheets, blankets, etc., are washed in hot water and dried in a hot drier. My furniture is wood, leather or vinyl. I hope that keeps them away. So far, we haven’t had an outbreak in the south yet.

We have so many other bugs that we all pay exterminators to keep out of our houses, and we have them treated quarterly. They come back in between if we have anything that needs attention.

Our biggest problems are roaches and mosquitoes (17 species in BR). Filth flies come when there are hurricanes because of the large amount of rotting everything that happens without electrical power. Even with all the treatment, roaches still come in when it rains hard, but they die quickly. Then we have to sweep them up.

Good luck!
L,
Sherri

What a timely topic. I was in to the local health food store, talking with the owner. He said he has had a week of question about bed bugs. He is thinking they are getting spread through the kids at school.
I always thought they had to be transported in furniture and stuff like that. Guess not. Glad mu kids are done with all that
